What is report?
A report is a spoken or written account of something that has been observed, seen, watched, heard or investigated.

·         What are the different types of reports?
The two different kinds of reports are:
a)      Newspaper report (A report about an incident)
b)      Report (for a magazine) about an important event

·         What are the important constituents of report writing?
Following are the most important constituents of a report:
1.       Headline:
-        Short and simple
-        In bold letters and in centre alignment
-        Easy to understand language
-        Avoid articles
-        In simple present tense
-        In passive voice
-        Related to the topic
-        Appealing, catchy and attractive

2.       Date:
-        Write the date after leaving a line after the headline
-        Write the date in the left hand side of the page
-        e.g. 17 May, 2014 or May 17, 2014

3.       Place
-        Write the name of the city exactly after the date
-        Mentions the actual name of the city if it is given in the question
-        If not given in the question, let the name be X Y Z city

4.       Name of the reporter (not applicable for newspaper reports)
5.       Designation of the writer (not applicable for newspaper reports)
6.       Introductory paragraph
-        Should be easy to understand
-        Should cover the most important aspects of the event
-        Should answer the questions: what, where, when, who, in one sentence only
-        Should not go to much in detail about the event

7.       Description of the event
-        The detail description of the event in the second and the third paragraph
-        Should be in order of occurrence of the event (flow of the event)
-        Should be in simple past tense
-        Should be in semi-formal language
-        Should answer the questions: how, who and why

8.       Eye witness account
-        Only applicable for the newspaper reports
-        Sometimes can be used in other forms of reports as well
-        Should be in indirect or reported speech, or in quotations marks
-        Should be in less than two to three sentences

9.       Further investigation or concluding paragraph
-        Only applicable for the newspaper reports
-        Further investigation should be done by the authorities like Police Department or by Government officer in some cases

·         Sample Report
You are Shekhar/Tripta a student of A.P Public School. Principals of two schools from Pakistan visited your school as part of a cultural exchange programme. Students of the school put up a cultural show in their honour. Write a report about it for your school magazine. (100 - 125 words).

On Friday 6th August, 2014, A.P. Public School witnessed a Cultural Show organized at school’s Community Hall by the school teachers and students to honour Dr. Shabana Yusuf and Ms. Yana Khan, the Principals from two schools in Pakistan.
As a part of Cultural Exchange Programme, Dr. Dr. Shabana Yusuf, the Principal of Al Habib International School, and Ms. Yana Khan, the Principal of Malana Public School, Pakistan visited A.P. Public School in X Y Z City, India. The programme started with the National Anthem of both the countries played by the school band. The school’s rock band ‘Jalasa’ played their own composition ‘Ummeed’ depicting the peace and love relationship between both the countries. The Kashmiri Dance performed by Smriti and her group (Class IX students) was the main attraction of the show.
“This programme has taken us down the memory lane where love, peace and harmony was prevailed in both the countries, and has made us to ensure the same in the present and future times for both the countries”, said Dr. Dr. Shabana Yusuf, the Principal of Al Habib International School. The programme ended on a happy note with both the Principals inviting Dr. Shivani Rajput, the Principal of A.P. Public School for Karachi for Cultural Exchange Programme.

Write a newspaper report of an accident that took place on Expressway near Lonavala.

Accident on Expressway kills 5

Five persons, including three women, died after their Toyota Innova vehicle met with an accident at Malavali, about 60 km from Pune, on the Pune-Mumbai expressway on Thursday evening.

Such was the impact that the vehicle had almost broken into two parts. According to the police, the accident took place around 5 pm at Devale bridge on the Expressway. The vehicle (MH 06 AW 1874) was heading to Pune from Mumbai. After the accident, the highway police, IRB workers and ambulances rushed to the spot, but the passengers could not be saved.

The deceased have been identified as Saroj Vitthal Shingade (30), Jyoti Hinge (30), Aarti Modak (25), Anil Sumande (36) and Anita Kambale (26). Jyoti and Aarti ran a hotel, while Anil worked as manager there; Shindade was the driver. They had gone to Lonavala for celebrating Anita's birthday, and the accident happened while they were dropping Anita home.

"Preliminary investigation has revealed that the driver lost control on the vehicle and hit a pillar of the bridge. The vehicle was completely damaged and we had to cut through parts of the car to get to the victims," a police officer told Mirror.
